My mono-white deck has gone through some radical changes since it started. First being lifegain/soldiers, to just purebred soldier tribal, it has overhauled again to be Angel tribal. The soldier tribal version of the deck competed with my much more satisfying Rhys tokens deck for the same creative space in my collection. Tribal angels found itself a much more alluring prospect with the release of Commander 2015.

From soldiers to angels. The deck's curve pretty much starts at 5cmc, and gets worse from there. :lol: The testing is still on-going and I need to see where I can fit more angels or more mana. It's not ever going to be a fast deck, but mono-white control isn't exactly what I'm after either. I'm using this deck to play out some cards I've always wanted to use but haven't: Gift of Immortality, Adarkar Valkyrie, Marshal's Anthem, etc.

Taj-nar swordsmith looks pretty bad with only four equipment in the deck. You'd be better off with Steelshaper's Gift if you can't get a stoneforge mystyc. Pay 5 to put a clamp into play? I'd rather drop the body and the extra cost. Then again, if you worry about stuff getting countered a lot, you should probably keep the swordsmith.

I thiink crusader of odric would be a better fit here than gideon's avenger. Or that benalish commander you want to put in.

Afterlife beats smite. Also, Crib Swap beats afterlife.

I like that you have nomad stadium in there. I say go all out with more pain lands: Ancient Tomb, City of Brass, Grand Coliseum, and Tarnished Citadel. Tarnished citadel is harsh, but "T: Get 3 1/1s." sound good to me. Ancient tomb could replace temple of the false gods. City of brass and grand coliseum could replace plains or fetches, depending on whether you value emeria or sun titan triggers more. Also consider Expedition Map. I put it in any deck with emeria. Usually in the place of a plains.

If you think you lack control, Null Brooch is an option.

If you want a little more control, 2 cards I can suggest are Dawn Charm and Angel's Grace. The Grace is more situational but can help when people use up resources for alpha strikes or whatever. The Charm is a card that is almost always useful. You could also run Vedalken Orrery if you want.

Mirror Entity and True Conviction are 2 of my favorite cards, and I think worth including in here as well, since they can turn a couple of tokens into big threats.

I want to clarify that I'm on a pretty small budget for this deck. If you can believe it, the Akroma's Memorial, SoL&S, and a number of other things were stuff I had sitting in the trade binder. So grabbing a City of Brass, Ancient Tomb, Tarnished Citadel, and Grand Coliseum to put in a mono-white deck is actually not worth the cost to me currently. By the end of the year I want to have 1 of each Mono-X deck, so having built this for ~$30 helps that cause. Just wait until you see the Big Green deck I've got planned :D

Getting back to the card suggestions. :wink: I have a spare Stoneforge Mystic but I'd rather have Taj-Nar Swordsmith because 1) it's a soldier, and 2) it does not have the KILL HIM NOW reaction Mystic gets. Afterlife is going in as I was on the fence between using either it or Smite anyway.

My goal with this deck is not tokens (I have a very focused deck for that already), but Soldier/Lifegain. The real inspiration was Odric, Master Tactician to control my combat so I could hit with precision or take out specific targets. I wish there was a better Diversionary Tactics kind of card in Mono-White because I'd love to have a "2nd copy" of Odric. If I managed to pull that "Exalted ALL THE THINGS" angel, it's going in.

I was shocked Mirror Entity got as expensive as it did. I bought the foil for it a couple years back for Rhys and damn I wish I picked up 2 copies (let alone Austere Command). I think I might add Expedition Map but there's no mana-ramp in this deck aside from just drawing a ton of cards... so I dunno if going to 36 land is the right move.

After much agonizing and number crunching I've overhauled this deck into a pure Soldier tribal deck. Gone is the excessive amount of lifegain gimmicks (if I want lifegain.dek I'll do a different deck entirely) and in come some much needed focused support.

Noble Purpose -> Extraplanar Lens
Unquestioned Authority -> Mind's Eye
Conjurer's Closet -> Moonsilver Spear
Well of Lost Dreams -> Sol Ring
Karoo -> Worn Powerstone
Sejiri Steppe -> Thespian's Stage

Now the card-for-card swaps aren't exact as this was a very "pull everything out" then "put everything in" approach. I still hold that Soldier decks work much better in 60-card form than EDH form, but this deck is running smoother than before and it's do to freeing up a ton of space for card draw, mana rocks, and more useful creatures.

Sorrow's Path.

With Darien in play and nothing else going, that's two soldiers per use and with creature pump so your army survives tapping it, the ability may actually matter in combat.

REBOOT!

Our LGS has a couple different names for the format and this fits right into one of them. There's "EDH" for broken fun decks, "Commander" for competitive league, and "Commanderp" for big stupid battlecruiser magic where you derp as hard as you can. This falls right into the commanderp nickname and I can't wait to get more games with it :)

Out with the soldier token tribal deck! It was competing for the same fun/creative space as my Rhys tokens deck, which was just doing it better. Still testing this deck and seeing where it does and doesn't work. So far I've been beaten back-to-back by Silklash Spider, so maybe a Mark of Asylum needs to find a slot.

Have you thought about light from within can be a great boost for your angels.
Many will get +2/+2.

I've done some more tweaking and here are the most recent changes.

Let's talk card changes. Mother of Runes was a difficult cut, but this deck needs lands more than it needs single creature protection. Weathered Wayfarer and Gift of Estates grab me multiple lands for multiple turns. Extremely pleased with their inclusion. Speaking of which... Hour of Revelation has single-handedly replaced ALL copies of Akroma's Vengeance (and Planar Cleansing) in my EDH collection. The cycling just does not outweigh the need to sweep Planeswalkers. Throw in the ridiculous manacost reduction ability and Hour is the clear winner.


I can confidently say this deck is super satisfying to play. :) There's a great balance of large creatures, token generators, flicker effects, and graveyard recursion to keep fuel on the fire. White as a color sorely lacks in card advantage, so this having multiple ways to reuse effects is great. I may look to add a little bit more flicker cards, but that's not at the top of my To-Do list.
